NAACP--Springfield Local ChapterThe mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.
One hundred years ago the nation's premier civil rights organization was established and continues to serve the disenfranchised through the collective courage of thousands of people from diverse backgrounds. People of all races, nationalities and faiths are united in one primary principle - that all men and women are created equal.
The Springfield chapter of the NAACP was created in the mid-1960s. For more than four decades the chapter has been dedicated to racial equality and community enrichment. Its current goals are to be an effective advocate for civil rights for all in the Springfield area, to promote equal opportunity in economic development, entrepreneurship, and employment, while empowering our young people by promoting educational and vocational excellence for all students.
The NAACP Springfield chapter is the principal sponsor and organizer of the annual Youth Empowerment Conference, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Essay Contest, the MLK Community March, and the annual Freedom Fund Ball.
The local chapter of the NAACP is also a partner in the 2010 African American Read-In Chain which is a national event that encourages communities to read African American literature. This year's programs and activities will take place at several venues in Springfield, including libraries, community-based organizations, and schools, on February 21 and 22.
