Branch/Youth Services Assistant

A parttime branch/youth services assistant position is available at the Strafford Branch and will be posted until the application deadline of August 3. The job pays $9.36 per hour and is scheduled for approximately 20-24 hours per week.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to relate to children, primarily pre-K through tween, their parents and work with the general public: Youth Services Assistant jobs are interdependent and mutually dependent regarding other job categories. Youth Services Assistants also have a great degree of direct contact with Library patrons. Therefore, it is essential that individuals who work in this position have the ability to work and interact in a cooperative, pleasant, and constructive manner with others and encourage and nurture positive relationships between children, the Library, staff and administration.
  • Timeliness: Since employees in this position work with other staff and provide assistance to the general public who patronize the Library, Youth Services Assistants must be punctual and timely in arriving to work and completing tasks. A Youth Services Assistant must also be capable of working all of the hours in their assigned shift.
  • Assist patrons with reader's advisory, information and location of library materials.
  • Assist and instruct patrons in the operation of patron computers (PC's) and other reference materials.
  • Assist Supervisor with collection development in youth areas
  • Routine telephone reference and information work.
  • Performs computer data searches, keyboard work at 35 wpm.
  • Assist with department programming (planning and presenting) and displays.
  • Plan and implement children's programs, story hours and displays inside and outside the branch.
  • Public Speaking, leading groups of children in program activities and tours.
  • Assist supervisor with departmental reports and correspondence as requested.
  • Basic file-keeping and clerical activities.
  • Regular handling of library materials.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum of 60 college hours and current enrollment in college in pursuit of an undergraduate degree.
  • One year public service experience.
  • Experience working with children.
  • One year library experience is preferred.

Skills/Job Knowledge

  • Ability to relate knowledge of children's developmental needs and stages to children's resources, programs and services.
  • Demonstrates artistic and creative ability in the production of children's programming and display.
  • Ability to interact pleasantly, constructively and cooperatively with library patrons and staff.
  • Excellent communications skills, oral and written.
  • Ability to effectively listen to and respond to patron inquiries.
  • Ability to perform basic functions during times of high public usage.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills in the areas of department management, program planning and preparation of reports.
  • Computer and keyboard skills, to include windows, word-processing and spreadsheet construction.

Contact

  • Regular, daily public contact.
  • Works closely with other department personnel.
  • Routine telephone contact with others departments and branches.

Supervision

  • Supervised by Branch Manager.

Physical Demands

  • Performs bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching from floor level to 6 feet in height.
  • Displays good coordination and mobility.
  • Routine lifting of library materials weighing up to 20 lbs.

Working Environment

  • Primarily indoors with heating and cooling regulated in a general library environment.

Miscellaneous Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a security background check.
