*Research by Marsha Hoffman Rising, from the Polk County, Missouri, probate file of Thomas McAllister, has uncovered that "indicated a three-year-enlistment at Springfield [Missouri] by Samuel McAllister as a 'colored volunteer.' Sam, born in Hawkins County, Tennessee, was a twenty-eight-year old farmer. He had black hair, eyes, and complexion. The slave was presented by J. W. McReynolds....Sam said he had belonged to the heirs of Wesley Pennington."

*Silas Owens, age 14, with A. P. Woods as his guardian, bound himself to A. G. McCanse as an apprentice to learn the trade and art of farming. Bound until age 21, Owens would receive from McCanse suitable clothing, attention in sickness and in health, and at the expiration of the apprenticeship, two suits of clothes worth $40.00 and $10.00 current U S money and such sum of money in lieu of education that may be assessed by the County Court. Silas Owens was presumably free, but since he was considered black by the law, by being a mulatto, he would not receive an education like white, male apprentices.
